Internet World Magazine, in partnership with Punk Ziegel & Company, Releases Results of 2002 Enterprise Storage Survey
9 out of 10 Respondents Consider Enterprise Storage to be a High Business Priority
DARIEN, CT (August 6, 2002) - The demand for enterprise storage solutions is on the rise, according to the results of a recent survey conducted by Internet World magazine, a Penton Media (NYSE:PME) business publication in conjunction with investment research firm Punk Ziegel & Company and market research firm Perseus Development Corporation. Administered to a group of Internet World subscribers, who have primary responsibility for specifying, recommending, authorizing or purchasing enterprise storage hardware and software, the survey was developed to assess the current and future adoption and deployment of a variety of storage solutions.
"This survey provides an excellent tool for understanding how storage solutions are being deployed today and how companies plan to deploy them in the future," commented Steve Berg, Senior Storage Analyst with Punk, Ziegel & Company.
Of the 495 executive and line-of-business managers who participated in the survey, 82% expect their organization's storage capacity to increase within the next 18 months. In addition 90% believe storage is "important to their enterprise," with 49% identifying storage as a "business critical priority."
"Corporate executives and line-of-business managers are clearly calling the shots when it comes to identifying the need, as well as funding the efforts to deploy business technologies," explains Phil Ripperger, Publisher of Internet World. "Our readership of C-level and senior management titles has demonstrated a serious level of commitment to increasing their organization's storage capacities. After all, competitive advantage is all about who has the best data and is able to access it the fastest."
With key demand drivers including disaster recovery, increased customer numbers, and gaining faster access to data making storage solutions a top priority, 66% of those surveyed will spend more than $10,000 on storage hardware, software and services in the next 12 months, with 26% spending more than $100,000.
"It is clear from our survey that major enterprises recognize that the latest storage technology will be important to their future success," adds John Pallatto, Internet World West Coast Bureau Chief. "Decision makers at these organizations are maintaining substantial budgets to implement the latest storage technology with the goals of reducing costs, increasing data availability, and streamlining storage management."
While levels of Storage Area Network (SAN) penetration are relatively low (only 26% of those surveyed have deployed a SAN), taking into account the high priority respondents place on enterprise storage indicates strong future prospects for storage networking equipment manufacturers. In addition, an impressive 52% of those surveyed are currently utilizing a Network Attached Storage (NAS) system with 26% of respondents also planing to implement a NAS solution in the next 18 months.
It is interesting to note that 25% of respondents have plans to implement the emerging storage virtualization software, indicating that companies in this space have significant opportunity and will benefit by more thoroughly educating end-users about the benefits of virtualization.
It is also important that due to significant interoperability concerns among respondents SAN homogeneity remains very high. The result is that vendors are competing fiercely to win the initial sale, knowing that once they begin doing business with an enterprise they are unlikely to be displaced by another vendor when follow up purchases are made.
The findings from this study will be featured in the October issue of Internet World. For more information on the Internet World Enterprise Storage Survey contact Phil Ripperger, Publisher at (203) 559-2919 or email@example.com.
